Phillip Pearson - web + electronics notes

tech notes and web hackery from a new zealander who was vaguely useful on the web back in 2002 (see: python community server, the blogging ecosystem, the new zealand coffee review, the internet topic exchange).

"despite what 2001 told you"

The BileBlog:

Now I ask you, what is the difference? It's a trick question, because there is NO DIFFERENCE. In both cases, you're embedding code in a script. Believe it or not, the arguments for and against either technique are identical. You're sacrificing compile time safety, you're adding ugliness, mixing concerns. You're gaining ease of development, lack of contracts, and ability to go crazy. So, admit it. If you're advocating beanshell, then you automatically lose all rights to bitch against code in jsp pages. Just because it's an xml file does not mean its inherently superior or cooler, despite what 2001 told you.

Heh.

Stupid question

If your fax number, many phone numbers, many of your e-mail addresses, URL, nicknames and IM addresses are sitting right there in your FOAF file, then why blur them out in the picture of the application you’re developing?

Update: Edd just e-mailed me with the answer. Some of the blurred-out values in the picture are in fact not sitting right their in his FOAF file - they are only available in a separately-encrypted chunk of FOAF. Aha!
